St. Louis Art Capsules – Beyond XY [RFT]

From the Riverfront Times: Featured Review: Beyond XY Transgender photographer Loren Cameron (San Francisco) documents himself and other female-to-male subjects naked from head to toe, muscularly flexing or in straightforward exposure of their transitional bodies. Joshua McVeity (Calgary) and David Vance (Miami) see a more commercial aspect in the male physique, capturing young men in Calvin Klein briefs or bronzed, Grecian specimens in athletic contortions. Trix Rosen (New York) — whose earlier work discerned a new, lesbian street chic that developed post-Stonewall — follows a single male subject (a French performance artist) in various states of subtle drag in a recent series of portraits.

‘Today’ wedding contest to allow gay couples [KSDK]

Fromo KSDK.com: NEW YORK (AP) — After a meeting with gay and lesbian activists on Thursday, NBC’s “Today” show said it is changing the rules for its annual wedding contest to allow same-sex couples to apply for a ceremony conducted on morning TV.

NBC extended the deadline for applications until Monday. Already thousands of couples have expressed interest in the on-air wedding, which the top-rated morning show has sponsored for a decade, a spokeswoman said.

“We’re thrilled that `Today’ show’s `Modern Wedding Contest’ now recognizes what most fair-minded Americans have already concluded — a wedding celebrates love and commitment, whether the spouses are straight or gay,” said Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

A Lesbian Lieutenant in Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Limbo [New American Media]

From New American Media: Editor’s Note: President Obama reached a deal with key democrats on repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. However, he also wants to hold off on actually making the law effective until after the Pentagon and the Joint Chiefs of Staff conduct a full review. Gay activists say it is a big step forward on a campaign promise made by the President. Republicans are complaining that the President is using the military to advance a liberal political agenda. But what about the service men and women actually caught in “don’t ask, don’t tell” limbo? More than 16,000 service members have been discharged for violating this policy since it went into effect in 1993. Lt. Robin Chaurasiya is one of them. She got her discharge papers this year after having served in the Air Force since 2006. She spoke with Sandip Roy from St. Louis, Mo.

New Line Theatre strips down, sharpens ‘Evita’ [STLToday]

From STLToday.com: New Line Theatre, a company that regularly turns its shoestring budget into vivid ribbons of musical theater art, is probably best known for offbeat, counter-cultural work. Shows like “Bat Boy,” “Love Kills” and “Return to the Forbidden Planet” seem to define the distinctive New Line brand, partly because they suit artistic director Scott Miller’s sensibilities and partly because New Line is the only place in town you’re apt to see them.

But there’s another important thread that runs through New Line’s history: stripped-down performances of big-name musicals. In seasons past, New Line has produced shows like “Camelot,” “Man of La Mancha” and “Cabaret” – shows that we associate with lush productions at the Muny, the Fox or Stages St. Louis. “Evita,” the latest New Line production, belongs to this adventurous tradition.
