Prop C & Gay Community: Vote No!
Coming up on August 3rd, is a vote on Prop C – “Missouri Health Care Freedom”. I would encourage everyone one of you to vote NO.
Why does an LGBT website care about how someone votes on a proposition which doesn’t directly involve the gay community at all?
Here’s why. Prop C will allow Missouri to “opt out” and ignore the upcoming Federal Health Care plans which were to start on August 4th.
But here’s the problem… Missouri does not recognize domestic partners. And as such, many people who are depending on this coverage would be left out in the cold. I’ll give you my story…
Last year, my partner was laid off from his job after 13 years of service. And now, 16 months later… he still can’t find a job WITH insurance.
My company doesn’t recognize domestic partnerships. So his only option is private insurance right now. But *NONE* of them will accept him as he is diabetic and obese. “Pre-existing conditions.”
So this new Prop will leave him with no way to get insurance.
When the Health Care Reform Act passed, we celebrated because he had the ability now to look forward to being able to get coverage as insurance companies would HAVE to drop those pre-existing condition clauses. But this Prop would bring them right back into place here in Missouri. And furthermore, he wouldn’t be able to switch to the gov’t supplied insurance.
I’m certain I’m not alone in the LGBT community having to watch a partner have to go bankrupt just to find ways to pay for his medical insurance NOW. I can’t imagine what will happen in another two, five, ten years with this current system.
So I urge everyone to force Missouri to be a part of this nation and vote NO on Prop C on tuesday. Sure, it may not affect you now, but in a few years, just like with Gay Marriage, Missouri will be a decade behind the rest of the nation.
